Breakthrough Bread

Sara Lee’s line of Soft & Smooth breads featuring docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) omega-3 is the first nationally distributed bread of its kind, according to the Downers Grove, Ill.-based manufacturer. Available in Made with Whole Grain White and 100% Whole Wheat varieties, the line gets its DHA omega-3 content from algae-based Life’s DHA by Columbia, Md.-based Martek Biosciences Corp. Both bread varieties contain 12 milligrams of DHA omega-3 per serving, which studies have linked to healthy brain development. The line is also an excellent source of calcium. Against a trying backdrop of persistently weak economic conditions, fierce competition and financially wary shoppers, supermarket produce departments faced much harsher headwinds during the past 12- month period than they have in recent years, as evidenced by marginal comparable-sales gains and a tentative outlook for the balance of the year, according to results of Progressive Grocer's 2009 Annual Produce Operations Review.
